About Us

Women Against Abuse, a 501(c)3 nonprofit agency, provides comprehensive supportive services for victims of domestic violence in Philadelphia.

Each year, Women Against Abuse provides immediate safety and quality support to thousands of individuals experiencing domestic violence. WAA strives to provide a continuum of care -- from immediate telephone crisis counseling to long-term supportive housing -- in a manner that promotes victim safety, autonomy and dignity. In addition, WAA seeks to enact long-term change for future generations through advocacy, systems change, strategic initiatives, and public awareness and education campaigns.

Program Highlights

  • For 36 years, Women Against Abuse has operated Philadelphia's first and only shelter for victims of domestic violence. WAA's 100-bed shelter provides immediate safety, basic needs and supportive services to approximately 600 women and children each year.
  • WAA operates the region's first transitional housing program, Sojourner House, for abused women and children.
  • WAA opened the nation's first Legal Center for victims of domestic violence. WAA's Legal Center provides free attorney representation, court advocacy and telephone counseling to help more than 5,000 individuals each year access legal protections from abuse.

Mission

The mission of Women Against Abuse is to provide quality, compassionate, and nonjudgmental services in a manner that fosters self-respect and independence in persons experiencing intimate partner violence and to lead the struggle to end domestic violence through advocacy and community education.
