Women Against Abuse, a 501(c)3 nonprofit agency, provides comprehensive supportive services for victims of domestic violence in Philadelphia. Women Against Abuse strives to provide a continuum of care -- from telephone crisis counseling to long-term supportive housing -- in a manner that promotes victim safety, autonomy and dignity.
Since 1977, Women Against Abuse has operated Philadelphia's only safe haven for victims of domestic violence. WAA's 100-bed safe haven provides safety, security, basic needs and supportive services to approximately 600 women and children each year.
Women Against Abuse operates the region's first transitional housing program, Sojourner House, for abused women and children.
Women Against Abuse opened among the nation's first Legal Centers for victims of domestic violence. WAA's Legal Center provides free attorney representation, court advocacy and telephone counseling to help more than 5,000 individuals each year access legal protections from abuse.
The mission of Women Against Abuse is to provide quality, compassionate, and nonjudgmental services in a manner that fosters self-respect and independence in persons experiencing intimate partner violence and to lead the struggle to end domestic violence through advocacy and community education.
