Volunteers make up a crucial component of the Women Against Abuse community. Pro bono representation provided by local law firms, for example, makes a meaningful difference for the thousands of clients seeking help at the Legal Center. Since Women Against Abuse staff cannot meet the high demand for representation, pro bono attorneys like Georgina O’Hara of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, LLP, play a vital volunteer role.
O’Hara, an Employee Benefits attorney, is attracted to the mission of Women Against Abuse, and says serving domestic violence victims “has always been very important to me.”
O’Hara started volunteering with Women Against Abuse over ten years ago. At that time, she helped represent Women Against Abuse clients seeking Protection From Abuse orders. Today, Morgan Lewis attorneys research cases and appeal decisions that negatively impact clients – an important service that Women Against Abuse attorneys do not always have time to provide. In addition to client cases, Morgan Lewis attorneys also provide their time and expertise to help the agency manage its Labor Relations.
“It’s really a group effort at the firm,” O’Hara explained, adding that she and her colleagues are always excited to find “a way that we can help Women Against Abuse better serve its clients and aid the community in need.”
“Knowing that you are having a hand in helping someone overcome the vicious cycle of abuse is rewarding in and of itself,” says O’Hara.
