City Council to declare February “Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month”

Philadelphia, PA – Councilman Bill Greenlee, City of Philadelphia Councilman-at-large, will present a resolution designating February “Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month” at the Thursday, January 28th City Council session at 10 a.m. The resolution marks the first time Philadelphia City Council will dedicate an entire month to awareness and prevention of teen dating violence. This far-reaching issue is gaining widespread recognition, as one in three teens reports experiencing physical abuse in a dating relationship.

The resolution marks the launch of many outreach efforts coordinated by the Teen Dating Violence Awareness Taskforce to raise awareness to this important issue. In February 2010, Taskforce members will distribute literature on healthy relationships at youth-centered events throughout the city including poetry slams, community fairs, and dances.

The Teen Dating Violence Awareness Taskforce is composed of representatives from:

  •  The Bryson Institute of the Attic Youth Center
  •  Congreso
  •  Galaei
  •  Lutheran Settlement House
  •  Women in Transition
  •  Women Organized Against Rape
  •  Youth Emergency Services
