Why volunteer with WAA?

What are the hours?
Schedules vary depending on volunteer role.

Who can volunteer?
Volunteer opportunities exist for people with various interests, skills and abilities.

How old must I be to volunteer?
The minimum age for individual volunteers is 18. Groups with individuals who are under 18 years of age are permitted for special projects.


How do I volunteer?
1. Complete an application
2. Come in for a Meet & Greet Interview
3. Attend 45-hour Domestic Violence Training & Hands-On Learning Sessions
4. Obtain Criminal History & Child Abuse Clearances

Domestic Violence Training
Volunteers who will be providing direct services are required to complete an intensive 45-hour domestic violence training. Training sessions are held throughout the year, and additional sessions may be scheduled as needed.

The next two trainings will occur at the following times:

January:

Monday 7, Tuesday 8, Wednesday 9, Friday 11, Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

February, March and April:

Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Begins Monday, February 25 and ends on Wednesday, April 16.

WAA Volunteer Opportunities - 2008

I. At the Shelter:

  1. Childcare Volunteer

Duties: help teachers in the Daycare Center, After School program and Summer Camp program.
Schedule:

    1. Any time from 9:00AM – 5:00 PM
    2. Some evenings

Positions available: Open
Training required: 40-Hour DV training

  1. Special Projects

    1. Developing Skills Workshops: Once a month, teaching any special skills to the residents (Resume writing, time management, sewing, knitting, baking, life skills, etc.)
    2. Coordinating & conducting activities on Saturdays for families as a whole.
    3. Making phone calls to set up a resource library and possible visits and workshops for the women and children within the Shelter.

Training required: DV 101

II. At Sojourner House (Transitional Housing Program):

1. Childcare Volunteer

Position supervised by a Staff member all the time.
Duties: co-supervise children during group meetings; help teachers in the Children Center.
Schedule:

    1. Any time during the day up until 6:00 PM
    2. Chaperones for trips on the weekend as scheduled

Positions available: 3
Training required: 40-Hour DV training

General requirements for any position:

Child Abuse Clearance
Criminal Background Check
