Innovating Our Outreach

Prior to COVID-19, we conducted focus groups with survivors of intimate partner violence who are immigrants to learn about the barriers this population encounters when seeking help. We learned that language access, fear of deportation, xenophobia and anti-immigration policies cause many victims who are undocumented to stay in abusive relationships.

Based on the focus group participants’ insights, we identified core messages that could be used in marketing materials to begin to address these concerns and promote our free legal aid. We translated social media posts into Spanish, developed flyers in seven languages, and placed advertisements in Metro Viet News, Chinese Metro Weekly and Al Dia.
