Volunteer With Us

Volunteers are crucial to advancing our mission and creating a safer Philadelphia! We have numerous opportunities for volunteer groups to engage in our work in meaningful ways. Below is all the information you'll need to get involved.

Apply for your group to volunteer

If you're an individual looking to get involved, check out these ways to engage.

Group Volunteer Projects may include:

Inventorying and preparing donated goods for distribution to clients: Women Against Abuse needs volunteers to sort, organize and inventory items that are donated from the community, and prepare them for distribution to our clients. This includes unpacking donations, updating our inventory tracking spreadsheet, and bagging and labeling items. This volunteer role will take place in our sorting space in Center City Philadelphia.

Time Commitment: This is needed on an ongoing basis, and the schedule can be flexible based on the group's availability.

Fundraising: Interested in holding a fundraiser for us? Learn how here.

Beautification Projects: Women Against Abuse operates several locations in Philadelphia, where your next beautification project can create a healing environment for survivors of domestic violence by maintaining our outdoor spaces and ensuring they are places where our clients feel safe and supported.

Time Commitment: This is a periodic need and would be contingent on the group's availability and our team's capacity to host a service project.

Administrative/Office Support: Women Against Abuse needs volunteers to assist with administrative tasks, such as assembling mailings, writing notes to supporters, providing support at the front desk, and maintaining an orderly copy room and marketing closet.

Time commitment: Weekly or on an as-needed basis.

Apply to be a Volunteer

We're so grateful for your interest in volunteering! Apply here and a member of our team will be in touch soon.

Volunteer Guidelines:

  • Training Requirements:

Community-facing roles may require Trauma-Informed Care or Domestic Violence/Intimate Partner Violence 101 training.

Volunteers in client-facing roles must complete the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence's 45-hour training for advocates.

Training is free for volunteers.

  • Age Requirement: Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Those under 18 require parental consent.
  • Physical Requirements: Some positions may involve standing for extended periods. Volunteers assisting with sorting or delivering donated goods must be able to lift at least 25 lbs.
  • Language Skills: Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply whenever possible.
  • Respect for All: Volunteers must demonstrate understanding and respect for individuals from all backgrounds and life experiences, ensuring that every survivor feels welcomed and supported.
  • Confidentiality: Volunteers must sign a confidentiality agreement to protect the privacy of survivors and those we serve.
  • Orientation: Our orientation process consists of a brief "Getting to Know You" meeting to better understand the types of volunteer roles the prospective volunteer is interested in. A more detailed orientation is required for established volunteers, during which we discuss expectations specific to the volunteer's role.

Megan's Story

I’ll never forget that moment when the judge asked, “Did he hit you?” I was standing in the courtroom, our 4-month old son sleeping in the baby carrier strapped to my chest. I didn’t know what to say. Everything else – the years of insults, the screaming in my face, the violence, the gaslighting, the drug abuse – was being overlooked. Just because you’ve never been hit, doesn’t mean you aren’t being abused.
