Renovating Ameya's Place

A Prehab

Watch a video about the renovations

Ameya’s Place - which serves as a refuge for more than 600 women, men and children each year - has transformed over the past year, thanks to a $3.6 million renovation and expansion.

Why renovate?

Ameya's Place serves a vital role as one of only two domestic violence shelters in Philadelphia. Its preservation and upkeep is therefore crucial. We had operated Ameya's Place since 2007, and had little previous opportunity to perform major updates to the building.

The renovations included new flooring, lighting, HVAC system upgrades, windows and roof repair/ replacement, as well as security updates to a new Welcome Center main entrance.

We were also excited for the opportunity to add four more resident rooms to the existing footprint. The expansion will allow us to serve approximately 33 more people each year, which is desperately needed. We also create private bathrooms for each of the 48 resident bedrooms to eliminate the current need to share - a change that will greatly enhance clients' living experience.

When did this take place?

Construction began in January 2023, and was carried out in phases to allow us to continue to provide life-saving services to survivors of abuse. We completed the renovation in the winter of 2024.

How were the renovations funded?

The planning and fundraising portion of this project was a multi-year process. We were grateful to secure $2.5 million from Pennsylvania's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program that paid for a large share of the renovations. And we called on our generous supporters to help cover the additional expenses through a Capital Campaign.

its not too late to support this project!
